Stuck? Here's how to fix it.

Most issues are setup-related — Accessibility permission on Mac, Full Access on iOS, or picking the right model. The list below covers the ones we see most often.

The dictation hotkey isn't working on Mac.

Buna needs Accessibility permission to listen for ⌥ Space and to paste transcripts into other apps. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, find Buna, and toggle it on. If Buna isn't in the list, drag /Applications/Buna.app into the list manually.

The iOS keyboard is showing 'Allow Full Access required'.

iOS Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Buna → Allow Full Access (on). This is required for the keyboard to talk to the Buna app while you dictate. Buna doesn't transmit anything off-device that isn't a transcription request.

Amharic is being transcribed as Turkish or Arabic.

You're probably on the wrong model. In Settings → Models, pick a 'Buna Managed · gemini-2.5-flash' or 'gpt-4o-transcribe' option — those are the two we've verified for Amharic. The older 'whisper-1' model misidentifies Amharic.

How do I bring my own OpenAI / Gemini API key?

Settings → API Keys. Paste your key. The 'Buna Managed' transcribers (server-side, no key required) sit at the top of the model picker; your own keys unlock the rest of the list. Audio with BYO keys goes from your device direct to the provider — never through our servers.

Can I dictate in English too?

Yes. Set the language in Settings to 'English' or 'Auto'. Auto handles code-switching — say 'Okay, ሰላም እንዴት ነህ?' and both languages stay in their own scripts.
